Paris | 2025
The easiest way to approach Paris as a photographer is to follow Henri Cartier-Bresson's footsteps—shoot black & white film through a 50mm lens, capture "decisive moments" rich with the stark contrast framed by those old, narrow streets.
But you're not Cartier-Bresson, and neither am I. And Paris is a city that looks good in color too, even in the fall (I was there for two weeks in October) when the sun rises later and sets earlier and the skies are more gray than clear.
It's not in my nature to abandon black & white all together, so there was some Kodak Tri-X 400 in my camera, but I opted to shoot mostly color with Kodak UltraMax 400—all on a Leica MP through a 28mm lens. Generally speaking, I'm partial to a 50mm, but I gravitate toward the 28mm when I’m traveling, especially to busy old cities where the streets are narrow and the width lends itself nicely to capturing scenes in which people and walls are in close proximity to each other, and to me.
There are 48 photos in this set, captured over two weeks in Paris, with a three day detour to Lyon right in the middle…
